How to Create a Cozy Home With Pets When You Have ADHD

Introduction

Heyyyy! I'm Carly. I'm the content creator and neurodivergent human behind HerCozyCrew. I'm trying to make my life fit my name better, because I'm the type of person who always seems to be in fight or flight mode. I LOVE all things cozy, like soft lighting, quiet mornings, pets nearby, and a home that feels peaceful, but trying to make my life cozy when it feels full of stress, chaos, and deadlines is hard. But I'm working on it, and maybe this post will help you do the same.

I've struggled with stress and overwhelm my entire life, but when I lost my structured 9-5 office job and became a full-time content creator, I had to become my own boss, set my own hours, and figure out the million tasks I have to do each day. I always liked having someone tell me, "do this, do that," but now that I command my own ship, I've fallen into a toxic go go go mode, especially when it comes to making money. My brain always tells me if I'm not working hard, then I must be lazy, and if I'm lazy, I'm not making money.

So I've been looking for and trying simpler ways to make my entire home and life calmer, for me and my pets. Because honestly, when I feel calmer, my whole home feels calmer too. I'm using this blog post half as a journal, and half as something I hope will help you embrace the cozy life a little more.

If you want more of the behind-the-scenes side of my life as a creator, I also shared more in Behind the Scenes of an Influencer & Content Creator: My Blog Journey Starts Here

This post is for you if...

  • You love all things cozy, but your life is a little hectic

  • You have ADHD and are either always at 100% or 0%, and you're trying to change that

  • You want your home to feel peaceful for both you and your pets

  • You want to stop stressing and live a slower, calmer life while still getting stuff done

  • You want something that's realistic, not perfect

What “cozy” actually means to me

When I say I want a cozy life, I don’t mean a perfect house, a perfectly clean kitchen, or some unrealistic routine where I wake up at 6 a.m. and magically have my life together.

I mean softer lighting. A calm corner to sit in. My pets nearby. A home that feels safe to be in. A life that feels a little less rushed and a little more grounded.

To me, cozy is less about aesthetics and more about how me and my home feels.

A few things helping me create a calmer home

Here are a few things I've been using lately that help support the kind of home and life I'm trying to create: calmer, cozier, softer, and a little less overstimulating.

This Tibetan singing bowl set has been one of my favourite little rituals. I'm a bit of a woowoo witchy girlie, so I like my house to be cleansed daily, either by opening the windows and lighting incense or by walking around my house with my Tibetan singing bowl to help cleanse the rooms of their energy. I'm not sure if you've ever used a singing bowl before, but the sound is so satisfying to me and tickles my brain in the most calming, loving way.

This heated blanket is peak cozy to me. Nothing screams comfort more than being wrapped up in a warm blanket while reading a book, cuddling up with my pets, or shopping online.

My Garmin vívoactive has been something I genuinely love. They have the vívoactive 6 now, which is even better, but I love mine because it helps me track my meditations, yoga, workouts, stress levels, and sleep. Lately I've been trying to practice better sleep hygiene and have even been writing down what I do each night and how it lines up with my sleep score. I like the Garmin because it feels less like a super distracting smart watch and more like a tool that helps me stay aware of my habits. I pretty much always keep it on Do Not Disturb so I'm not being bombarded by notifications.

A lot of my overwhelm comes from juggling work and life at home, so if you’re curious, I also shared more of the gear I personally use every day as a content creator and pet influencer on this blog post.

This mood light  is such a fun little cozy upgrade. You can use it in the shower, in your bedroom, or anywhere you want some calming ambiance. I am big on not using the big lights in the house, so I love softer lamps like this and other cozy home lighting that makes everything feel warmer and more relaxed.

My Hatch Restore 3 is another thing I love. It's a bit pricey, but I pretty much have the rain noises on 24/7, even when I'm not sleeping. It creates this nice background noise that helps me focus on whatever I'm doing, whether that's working, winding down for bed, or just trying to make the house feel a little softer.

This sleep mask with built-in headphonesis something I recently got and LOVE. Lately I've been listening to sleep meditations on the Insight Timer app, but I hated putting my phone under my pillow, so I got this instead. It's so much cozier, way more comfortable, and it doesn't wake up the person beside you because they can't hear anything even though you can. Honestly, 10/10.

A few things that are actually helping me lately

Daily journaling. Just write. Write anything. Write about the things stressing you out, write about the things you're grateful for, write about how life is amazing and that you're trusting in the universe. Write about what makes you sad, what's overwhelming you, and the things you want to manifest. Speak your thoughts into the universe, and write them down. Sometimes just sitting on the couch with a journal, a cozy blanket, and one of my pets nearby is enough to help me feel a little more grounded.

A few journal prompts if you don't know where to start:

  • What is weighing on me the most right now?

  • What would make today feel calmer and softer?

  • What am I grateful for in this season of life?

  • What am I trying to call in or manifest right now?

  • What do I need to let go of today?

  • What would the coziest version of me do today?

  • What is one small thing I can do today to support myself and my pets?

I've also been meditating daily, and I find it's something I've actually begun to look forward to. I know, you're probably going to say, "meditating is hard!" but it doesn't have to be. Start with some simple 5-minute guided meditations on YouTube or Insight Timer. Don't think, I need to stop thinking - just let the thoughts pass. Or try box breathing: inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. It helps keep your mind on your breathing and timing instead of the million things you have to do.

On my Garmin vívoactive, there's a meditation section and it measures your stress, heart rate, and breathing. You'd be surprised at how good, or bad, you might be at meditating. Start off slow and work your way up. I'm at 40-60 minute meditations these days because I find it takes me at least 10 minutes to really get into the feelings and calmness. It takes me time to relax.

Yoga and stretching!!! It's been helping me so much lately. I love it. I've never been a flexible person, but lately I've been doing 10-30 minutes of stretching or yoga a day and it's really helped. I find foam rolling has also helped a lot too. Here's the foam roller I have: High Density Foam Roller

When I start feeling overwhelmed, I try to do some breathing exercises because it really helps reset my mind and body. But you know what's even better? Walking away from the task or thoughts that are overwhelming you and going to be with your pets. Go give your cat a big smooch and some catnip, or take your dog for a 15-minute walk around the block. You'll feel better, and your pets will too. Sometimes the coziest thing you can do is step away from the pressure for a minute and be present in your own home.

Why this matters for my pets too

One thing I’ve realized is that when I’m overwhelmed, my whole house feels different. The energy feels different. I’m more distracted, more tense, and less present.

And when I’m calmer, I’m a better pet parent too.

I’m more likely to slow down and enjoy a walk with my dog, spend intentional time playing with my cats, or just sit on the couch and actually be present with them instead of thinking about the next 15 things I need to do.

Creating a calmer life for myself also creates a calmer home for Widget, Olive, and Sprout, and that matters to me a lot.

Small cozy resets that help me feel more grounded

When I’m feeling stressed, overstimulated, or like my brain is going in 20 directions at once, these are a few tiny things that help:

  • Open a window for fresh air

  • Turn on a lamp instead of the big lights

  • Put on rain sounds or calming background noise

  • Journal for 5 minutes

  • Do a quick stretch

  • Walk Widget around the block

  • Sit with Olive or Sprout for a few quiet minutes

  • Tidy one small surface

  • Light incense

  • Put on a guided meditation

None of these things magically fixes my life, but they help me reset.

My honest experience

My honest experience is that your life isn't going to become perfect and amazing the second you make changes like these. Life is still hard. Life is still stressful. But these tiny changes will make a difference.

Do I still get overwhelmed? Totally. But I have the mindfulness now to recognize the feeling and step back to analyze the situation, write about it, meditate on it, or even just walk away for a couple of minutes to walk the dog and recalibrate.

And if you’re looking for more ways to spoil your pup a little, I also wrote about some Canadian dog brands that your pup deserves here.

I wish people understood that they're not alone, which is part of why I wanted to write a blog post like this. I get it. Life is hard and stressful, and there are days where I just want to lay in bed all day and cry. But you're not alone, and I hope by writing this out, maybe you'll try making some of these changes, or look at the products linked above, and maybe they'll help you as much as they've helped me.

My stress levels are better, and I'm learning to teach myself that it's okay to relax. I don't need 10,000 steps on my watch every day. What I might need more is 10 minutes of meditation and mindfulness, or 5 minutes of journaling, or a quick 10-minute stretch between work tasks. Those are the things that feel important for my health and my mind right now. And honestly, when I take care of myself better, my whole home feels softer too.

A big part of my stress honestly comes from working for myself, which I talk about more in Is Being a Content Creator Worth It in 2026? The Pros and Cons You Should Know

My home still isn’t perfect, and that’s kind of the point

I don’t want this post to make it sound like my house is always spotless, peaceful, and perfectly. It's not.

There’s pet fur. There’s clutter. There are unfinished projects. There are days where I feel behind, stressed, and totally out of sync.

But I think that’s why this matters so much to me.

I’m not trying to create a perfect life. I’m trying to create a home that still feels comforting, even when life feels messy.

Questions you might be asking

What if I’m bad at creating cozy routines?

That’s perfectly okay! I always tell myself Rome wasn’t built in a day. Not everything needs to get done every day. Even if you only meditate once a week, that’s still better than nothing at all.

What if I’m too overwhelmed to do all of this?

You don’t have to do it all. Even just setting aside 5 minutes a day to do one thing is better than nothing.

What if my house still doesn’t feel calm?

Work on making your house feel cozier in small ways. I love the products I listed above for that, but I also know I’m someone who gets overwhelmed easily by clutter and things not being in their place. If that sounds like you too, start with one tiny reset. Put on a fun podcast, tidy one surface, turn on a cozy lamp, open a window, or make one corner of your home feel softer. It doesn’t have to be a full house makeover to make a difference.

What if I don’t have much time?

If you have time to read this blog, you have time to relax and do something good for your body and mind.

Do I need all of these products to create a cozy life?

Not at all! I just wanted to share things that personally help me live a more mindful and cozy life.

If you want to start, start here

If this post sounds like something you need, don’t try to change your whole life overnight.

Pick one thing today:

  • journal for 5 minutes

  • stretch for 10 minutes

  • tidy one cozy corner

  • go for a short walk with your dog

  • turn off the big lights and create a softer space

  • try a guided meditation before bed

You don’t need to do everything at once!

Final thoughts

The thing I want you to take away from this post is that you can have a cozy home and a cozy life with you and your pets. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and it doesn’t have to happen overnight.

I want to encourage you to take 10 minutes today to do one of the things I listed above. Journal. Meditate. Stretch. Go for a walk with your dog. Sit under a cozy heated blanket and just breathe for a minute. Or create a softer nighttime routine with something like my Hatch Restore 3. You’ve got this.

If you want to make your home feel a little calmer and cozier too, I linked a few of my favourite things throughout this post that have genuinely been helping me lately.

Can you create a cozy routine if you have ADHD?

Yes. A cozy routine does not have to be strict or perfect. If you have ADHD, it can help to focus on small habits that make your home and life feel calmer, like journaling, meditating, stretching, or creating a softer bedtime routine.

How can I make my home feel calmer with pets?

Try focusing on small changes that make daily life feel more peaceful, like decluttering, using softer lighting, creating calming routines, and making time to connect with your pets through play, walks, or quiet cuddle time.

What are simple ways to create a cozy life when you feel overwhelmed?

Start small. Journaling for 5 minutes, doing a short meditation, stretching, using calming background noise, or making one corner of your home feel softer and cozier can all make a difference.

Do I need a perfect routine to live a calmer life?

Not at all. A calmer life is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about finding small habits and rhythms that support you, even on busy or stressful days.

What products can help create a cozy and calming home?

Some products that can help create a calmer home include heated blankets, soft lighting, sound machines, sleep masks with headphones, and simple wellness tools that make routines feel easier and more comforting.
